Eugene Semple papers, 1858-1908 (bulk 1880-1907).

The Eugene Semple papers are composed primarily of correspondence. The letters describe Semple's editorship of the Portland Herald, his work as Oregon state printer, his administration as Washington territorial governor, his numerous financial speculations, and his relationships with family members. Correspondence from the gubernatorial period contains a great deal of information on anti-Chinese agitation and on the drive for women's suffrage. Records from various businesses managed by Semple are also found in his papers. The activities of the Lucia Mill Company and the Seattle & Lake Washington Waterway Company are documented in detail.
